Auto Insurance Laws – What You Should Know

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

Do you know the proper auto insurance laws of your state? Do you know how much coverage you need? Or, what is the minimum coverage required? Do you have liability insurance? What will happen if you drive to another state and get pulled over?

To answer these questions, call your insurance agent. They will have all the best information about state and regional laws that involve you and your vehicle. It’s their job to know all this and help you with it. Before you call, make sure you have all your questions ready so you don’t forget.

Basic rule is that each state has a minimum requirement for the auto insurance coverage you need to have for certain situations. The three types of coverage is injury to another, injury to all people, and damage to property.

One of the most unconsidered issues is traveling to another state. You must have auto insurance coverage to conform to that state’s laws. Call your insurance before you cross state lines to change coverage to meet the local requirements.

Some states have laws covering vehicles that you don’t need insurance for. In Washington and Oregon, motorcycles, scooters, and mopeds do not need insurance to drive them.

All states require you to carry auto insurance proof on you at all times. When pulled over if you don’t provide proof, you will get a ticket and have to contest it in court. Simply bring the proof to the judge and you should get acquitted. If not, it’s a hefty fine.

As a driver, it is your responsibility to know the laws you are driving under. Remember that a drivers license, hence driving itself, is considered a privilege rather than a right.

11 Top Factors That Can Make A Difference In Your Auto Insurance Rates

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

Your auto insurance premiums are calculated by a number of different factors relating to your insurance risk. Each one of these factors can individually or collectively determine the premium that you are charged. If you are aware of these factors, you can sometimes do something about changing things so you can benefit from lower premiums.

1. Verifiable Driver Insurance History

One of the first things that an insurance company will look at is your insurance history. How long you have had insurance for? What has your claims record been? Is the car insured under your name? Sometimes, people say that they have been an insured driver for years but the insurance has been under their parents’ or spouse’s name. This does not provide a verifiable insurance history so insurance companies may be weary about providing you with insurance coverage. If you have had several claims in a short space of time, you will be paying a higher premium than someone who has a claim-free record.

2. Age of the Driver

Many insurance companies will not insure drivers under the age of 21 years because they are a much higher risk group. Having just learned to drive, younger drivers generally driver faster, are less aware of other vehicles on the road, and often do not judge distances very well. They may also be very nervous drivers that cause accidents because they drive too slowly or hesitate when pulling out into traffic. The optimal age for getting the best insurance premiums is 35 years of age.

3. Gender of Driver

While there are many jokes about bad female drivers, the road statistics say otherwise. Men are far higher-risk drivers and involved in accidents far more frequently than women. Often, they are also involved in far more serious accidents because they usually are travelling at high speeds. Female drivers can benefit from discounted premiums, and men will only receive lower premiums if they have a good driving track record.

4. Overnight Storage of Vehicle

This factor relates mostly to the theft-risk factor. It varies between different countries and residential areas. In general, more urban areas have a higher risk than rural areas. Insurance companies prefer that a vehicle is parked off the street, behind a locked gate or in a locked garage. Coastal areas also carry higher insurance premiums because of the humidity and salt in the air that causes corrosion to the working parts of a car. A vehicle that is stored in a garage as opposed to being parked outside will require less maintenance and therefore benefit from lower insurance premiums.

5. Mileage and Use of Vehicle If you are a housewife or work from home, you are unlikely to use much mileage and will therefore benefit from lower insurance premiums. If you commute to work every day, your mileage and road usage increases your risk profile. Your premiums will therefore be moderately higher. If you are a sales rep or use your car for work, it is classified as commercial use and will be the most expensive premium because you are a frequent road user.

6. Make and Model of Car

Next to driver history, this is possibly the biggest factor that will affect your insurance premium. There are two aspects of risk that are affected by the make and model. First, the theft risk. If it is a BMW that is thought of as a highly desirable vehicle, it will therefore be considered a high theft risk. The second risk is accident risk. Is it a vehicle capable of high speeds which would put it at a high risk level?

7. Power to Weight Ratio

Some vehicles have powerful engines yet are not viewed as very high risk. This is because they have a low power-to-weight ratio. A sports car or Mini Cooper is an example of a high power-to-weight ratio vehicle that has fast acceleration. This is therefore viewed as a much higher risk.

8. Cost of Replacement Parts

Some cars are very expensive to maintain, especially if they are not manufactured in your home country. The cost of replacement parts is a big factor in determining your insurance premiums. If parts have to be imported in the event of a claim, this will increase your insurance premiums.

9. Actual Value of Vehicle and Age of Vehicle

A luxury vehicle will naturally carry a more expensive premium than a standard vehicle. However, a vintage or classic vehicle may have a high value but because it is used less frequently, it will have a much lower insurance premium.

10. Vehicle Security Systems

Most modern vehicles have factory-fitted security systems. Some use immobilizers and alarms systems as standard features. If it is a desirable and high-theft risk vehicle then insurance companies may insist on having additional security systems such as vehicle tracking installed in the vehicle.

11. Credit History of Insured Person

This is not always an important factor but it can affect your insurance premiums. If you have a long and detailed poor credit history, you are generally considered to be more of a risk and will have to pay higher premiums.

Florida SR22 Insurance Requirements: Why Are SR22 Insurance Policies Unique?

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

There are many people who presently drive motor vehicles on public roads without an appropriate amount of coverage being provided by their insurance policies. Also, many people drive on public roads without respecting the laws of the public roads. Individuals who perform these activities, and neglect the laws and requirements of the public roads, may have to cope with Florida SR22 insurance requirements in order to continue to legally drive their vehicles on public roads.

If an individual drives a vehicle without proper coverage being provided by their insurance policy, they place every other driver on the road at risk of a serious financial loss. If a driver who does not have car insurance happens to get into a car accident, there will not be any coverage to pay for the damages that are incurred through the accident.

So, if there are extremely large expenses inherent in the damages incurred through a car accident, and a driver does not have proper car insurance to cover the damages, drivers involved in the accident will have to pay for the damages on the road. This is exactly why the DMV is very stringent when it comes to enforcing the policy that requires all drivers to have a certain level of coverage covering their vehicles and driving activities.

There are many different reasons why individuals must purchase SR 22 insurance policies today. The primary reason why people must purchase this type of insurance policy is due to the fact that they are not to be trusted when it comes to maintaining their insurance policy. Other people who may have to submit this type of insurance policy may simply have a number of outstanding traffic citations, or they may have even incurred a DUI violation as well.

Since these drivers are high-risk candidates on the road, the DMV believes that it is necessary for these drivers provide proof that they are paying for a valid insurance policy at all times. These drivers must purchase SR 22 insurance policies through insurance companies that will inform the DMV when their insurance policy is valid, as well is when the policy is not valid. Since the DMV is constantly updated about when these policies are updated and when these policies are invalid, they can maintain the proper status of the license of the individuals who maintain these policies.

Since insurance companies must inform the DMV as soon as an SR 22 insurance policy becomes invalid, the DMV will suspend the license of a driver who does not maintain a proper amount of insurance when they are maintaining an SR 22 policy. So, if you have an SR 22 insurance policy, and you fail to pay your fees, or your policy is canceled for any reason, it is likely that your driver’s license will be suspended at the same time as well.

The only way you can reinstate your driver’s license at this point is by simply reinstating your SR 22 insurance policy. As soon as you reinstate your policy, the company that is providing your insurance policy will submit an SR 22 form informing the DMV that your insurance policy is valid once again. Once the DMV is aware of the fact that you do indeed have insurance coverage at the present time, they will reinstate your license to a valid status as well.

As you can see, the entire process that is required by the DMV is a necessary process to ensure that all drivers on the road are driving with the right amount of coverage. Since the primary reason why Florida SR22 insurance requirements are placed upon individuals is due to the fact that they did not purchase the right amount of insurance earlier on in their driving careers, this type of form is generally only required of drivers who have proven themselves to be high-risk driving candidates.

Going To A Festival? Experience The Luxury Of A Caravan

Friday, July 30th, 2010

It was five years ago, on my annual trip to Leeds Festival that I became a caravan lover. That year I didn’t have an early pass and was eager to find a location to camp before there was no space left when the strap on my main rucksack broke. I balanced it on my tent bag and trudged on through the, now liquid, mud. Subsequently this additional weight then broke the strap on my tent bag, leaving me stranded.

Fortunately some friends of mine were nearby in the caravan section and helped me carry my things to their caravan. What luxury! It was only a cheap caravan but when equated with my one-man tent in which I couldn’t lie down straight, even without my bag, it was brilliant. How jealous I was of their luxury caravan when I opened my bag to find half of my things broken and damaged by the fall in the mud.

The next year I was naturally in one of those dry, warm caravans and happily watched the other festivalgoers struggle with their bags. Evidently my luck hadn’t improved and the caravan flooded. Again my new Top Shop inspired festival wardrobe was destroyed along with most of other caravan.

Thankfully I’d thought to make sure contents were included on my caravan insurance. We didn’t have to worry about the harm to the caravan and I would even say we enjoyed living in the damp for three days. When all said and done, it is all part of the festival experience.

Now we have annual caravan holidays abroad, which are ideal for a cheap holiday with friends. I wouldn’t stop my caravan holidays for anything and definitely wouldn’t risk an uninsured driver crashing into us and spoiling our tradition. Since the flood incident I always ensure we have the right insurance cover for whatever country we happen to journey to, it’s so critical to have the right cover for European travel.

If you’ve a motor home then you have good taste, and really know how to have a good time. Enjoy your motor caravan and go on holiday. But don’t forget that holidays are meant to be stress free; with our less than reliable weather this isn’t forever the situation. Get the right cover for your vacation and have fun!

You will need to ensure that when you go to your festival of choice or off on your holiday that you have the correct caravan insurance to cover everything that could go wrong. Coversure are a trusted insurance broker with strong relationships with insurance providers. They will be able to secure you the best deal on your caravan insurance.
